Johnny Cash - Čovjek u crnom

Dva mjeseca prije treće godišnjice smrti Johnnyja Casha objavljen je peti nastavak njegove suradnje s producentom Rickom Rubinom iz serije ”American” koja se u diskografskoj karijeri te country legende smatra podjednako važnom poput prvih ploča za etiketu Sun records iz 50-ih i najpopularnijeg Cashova opusa za kompaniju Columbia records iz 60-ih godina.

Opće je poznat kao ”Čovjek u crnom” s naramkom odličnih pjesama kao što su ”I Walk the Line”, ”Folsom Prison Blues”, ”Ring of Fire”, ”Man In Black”, ”Hurt”, ”One Piece at a Time”, ”The One on the Right Is on the Left”, and ”A Boy Named Sue”, ”Get Rhythm” i ”The Rock Island Line”. Karijeru country-rock glazbenika započeo je 1956. godine i u njoj je ustrajao sve do same smrti unatoč mnogim problemima i ovisnostima, poput onih o alkoholu, drogama, tabletama protiv bolova, itd. Nakon što je o Johnnyju Cashu 2005. g. snimljen biografski film ”Hod po rubu” (”Walk the Line”) prodaja njegovih albuma porasla je za 700%.

John R. Cash rodio se 26. veljače 1932. godine u Kingslandu, u Arkansasu, i tijekom djetinjstva je htio - ne htio bio izložen utjecajima glazbe seoskog Juga – himnama, folk baladama te radničkim pjesmama i naricaljkama. Usprkos tome, gitaru je naučio svirati tek tijekom vojne službe u Njemačkoj ranih pedesetih, kad je počeo skladati i svoje prve pjesme.

U karijeri, koja je trajala gotovo pet desetljeća, Cash je za mnoge upravo personifikacija country glazbe usprkos tome što je sam osjećao odbojnost prema mainstreamu u Nashvilleu. On je, osim toga, poput Raya Charlesa, Boba Dylana ili Elvisa Presleyja, glazbenik koji je daleko premašio granice jednog glazbenog žanra te snimio pjesme koje se trpaju i pod rock’n’roll, blues, rockabilly, folk i gospel, a na svaki je od tih žanrova i utjecao.

Glazbenu je karijeru oživio na početku devedesetih suradnjom s popularnim irskim bendom U2, ali i s mnogima drugima. Godine 1997. dijagnosticirana mu je Parkinsonova bolest, a nakon dugogodišnje borbe s upalama pluća i dijabetesom, umro je 12. rujna 2003.

Posljednji rezultat Cash-Rubinovih studijskih sessiona, započetih 1994., bio je album ”American IV: The Man Comes Around” iz studenoga 2002., nakon kojega se Johnny Cash odmah posvetio radu na novim snimkama svjestan da će one – zbog njegova ozbiljno narušenog zdravlja – najvjerojatnije biti i posljednje što ih ostavlja za sobom.

U namjeri da ispiše svoj glazbeni testament, ”American V: A Hundred Highways”, nije ga spriječio ni gubitak supruge June Carter u svibnju 2003.

Osim jednom već snimljene Cashove skladbe ”I Came To Believe”, ovo posthumno izdanje sadrži i njegovu posljednju napisanu pjesmu ”Like the 309”, dok se u izboru obrada odlučio za kolege kantautore: od velikana americane Hanka Williamsa (”On the Evening Train”) i Brucea Springsteena (”Further On (Up the Road”) do country/gospel istomišljenika Larryja Gatlina (uvodna ”Help Me”) te kanadskih autora-pjevača Gordona Lightfoota (”If You Could Read My Mind”) i Iana Tysona (”Four Strong Winds”), uključujući jedan od najpoznatijih naslova, ”Love’s Been Good To Me”, pisca, skladatelja i interpreta Roda McKuena.

Svaki sastojak Cashovog koktela duhovnih i svjetovnih emocija na posljednjem albumu ”American V: A Hundred Highways” može se pročitati kao retrospektivna poruka pred odlazak u vječnost ovog Američkog sina, autora i pjevača, ljubitelja Juga i Indijanaca, whiskyja i - akustične gitare.
